This essay analyzes the legislation developed in relation to the image of Catholic worship in the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada in the mid-18th century, a period when ecclesiastical authorities strongly questioned such issues as holiness, prodigies, the possession of relics, the circulation of prints, and the relationship between believers and religious objects. It examines provincial synods, diocesan councils and church meetings whose policies were based on three main points: i) the use of relics of saints and martyrs and the censoring of paintings of miracles; ii) the work of the architects of imagery and the circulation of satirical prints; and, iii) the ordering of worship as professed by devotees to images. The aim is to describe the tensions that emerged between ecclesiastical reform policies and the uses of Catholic images by the society of Nueva Granada.
