Abstract

PEREZ PUENTE, Leticia. Instruments of Episcopal Power in the Indies: Four 16th-century Tridentine Seminaries. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.133, pp.169-198. ISSN 2448-7554.

The objective of this study is to argue that the purpose of the conciliar seminaries was not only to train clergymen, but also to strengthen episcopal authority in diocesan government, the ultimate goal of the Tridentine legislation that ordered their creation. With this intention in mind, the essay examines the circumstances surrounding the creation of the seminaries of Quito (1569), Santa Fe de Bogotá (1582), Lima (1591), and Guatemala (1597).

Keywords : conciliar seminary; colleges; Bishops of the Indies; education in Spanish America; priestly formation.
