Abstract

BADILLO BARCENAS, Mariana  and  ALBERTI MANZANARES, María del Pilar. The Masculinities of Seminarists: Religious Masculinity and Clerical Masculinity. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.133, pp.41-78. ISSN 2448-7554.

This study focuses on the formation of priests and discusses how a variety of factors interweave to produce two masculinities in the setting of a rural community in the Municipality of Texcoco, Estado de México (Mexico). The methodology consisted in applying a variety of instruments designed to generate both quantitative and qualitative data, on the basis of which two concepts of masculinity are proposed: 1) religious masculinity, characteristic of men who choose to enter the priesthood; and, 2) clerical masculinity, characteristic of men who are in training to become priests.

Keywords : religious masculinity; clerical masculinity; gender; priestly formation; rural society.
