Abstract

CARETTA, M. Nicolás. Caxcan settlements in the Juchipila Canyon and the first initiative for a high road from Guadalajara to Zacatecas. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.130, pp.69-90. ISSN 2448-7554.

This work presents elements that lead to identifying the first route, or roadway, that was intended to serve as a High Road (Camino Real) communicating the city of Guadalajara with silver mines in Zacatecas. The approach involved analyzing archaeological sites in the Juchipila Canyon and examining information from early sources, including accounts of the routes that conqueror-settlers used. The essay also explores the conflicts that broke out between the Caxcans and the Spaniards with their allies that culminated, eventually, in the Mixtón War. Finally, it traces what would become the definitive route of the High Road from Guadalajara to Zacatecas.

Keywords : Caxcanes; High Road; Juchipila Canyon; Guadalajara; Zacatecas.
