Abstract

MORA MURO, Jesús Iván. Catholicism in the Face of Modernity: Gabriel Méndez Plancarte and the Journal Abside. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.126, pp.139-170. ISSN 2448-7554.

This essay analyzes the role of Father Gabriel Méndez Plancarte and the journal Abside as representatives of Catholic culture in early 20th-century Mexico. It seeks to manifest the journal's thematic proposals and the posture that its contributors adopted as they confronted the ideas of modernity; which can be summarized in two basic lines: studies of the classics (Greco-Roman culture), and of Hispanism (studies of New Spain and Francoism).

Keywords : Méndez Plancarte; Catholicism; modernity; classic culture; Hispanism.
