In this essay, the analysis of a funeral functions as a kind of keyhole through which it becomes possible to study an epoch by examining the death, and life, of one individual. It analyzes the funeral of the Archbishop of Guadalajara, Francisco Orozco y Jiménez (who died there in 1936), in the political and social context of the 1930s in Jalisco.
