One objective of this article is to reflect upon the use of Primordial Titles in contemporary agrarian litigation. The essay is based mainly on an analysis of the Título de San Mateo Capulalpan (Oaxaca) and is staged at two moments: first, when the Title was presented to the agrarian tribunals and an expert analysis was requested to prove its authenticity (1996); and, second, when it was first elaborated in the mid-18^th century. The study attempts to clarify certain contradictions that have emerged between the analyses requested by agrarian tribunals and problems that exist in the genre of the Títulos Primordiales itself.
