Mexico is the main producer and exporter of smooth green chayote (Sechium edule) worldwide. In the state of Veracruz, where it is produced more than 70 % of the national volume, wilting of chayote plants has been there since 1990 as an important phytosanitary problem. The objective of this work was to determine the etiology of wilting plants of chayote in the Central region of state of Veracruz. During the 2011-2012 production cycle, 14 plants with wilting symptoms were sampled, and roots were harvested at the shoot emerging zone. Thirty segments were dissected at the advancing zone of necrotic tissue, disinfested with 3 % sodium hypochlorite, washed with sterile distilled water and cultured onto PARPNH, PDA and V8-agar media. The basal guides of 60 plants were inoculated by sporangium deposition and kept under greenhouse conditions. Symptoms appeared 22 d after inoculation as wilting and yellowing of leaves. Phytophthora capsici was reisolated from the inoculated plants, and identified molecular and morphologically for first time in Mexico as the causal agent of the S. edule wilting plants in Veracruz.
