Abstract

The fungus Moniliophthora roreri, causal agent of frosty pod rot, is the main limiting disease of cocoa (Theobroma cacao) production in Tabasco, México. The fungicide azoxystrobin was assessed as a healing agent of M. roreri. In vitro, azoxystrobin at 450 mg L-1 inhibited 100 % of the conidial germination and 96 % of mycelium growth at 1250 mg L-1. The effective concentration 95 (EC95) for germination and micelial growth was 138 y 1203 mg L-1, respectively. Azoxystrobin at 1250 mg L-1, in vivo, reduced fruit rot to 42 % compared with 94 % in untreated fruits. The therapeutic effectiveness of azoxystrobin was 55 % in young fruits, up to 10 cm long, naturally infected and with symptoms of swellings. The treated fruits reached an irregular maturity with fewer seeds. This is the first report of the curative action of a fungicide on Moniliophthora roreri, and indicates the possible incorporation of azoxystrobin in integrated disease and crop management programs.
