Abstract

GALICIA LECHUGA, David. Carpe diem and vanitas vanitatum in Sor Juana's Sonnets. Acta poét [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.1, pp.205-231. ISSN 2448-735X.

This paper proposes the existence of the topic of vanitas vanitatum, which refers to life's ephemerality and asserts its vanity and transience. In order to do this, the author stresses the difference between this topic and the similar one of carpe diem where, rather, the briefness of the moment is stressed in connection with the urge to enjoy it. Also, the theme of collige, virgo, rosas is outlined within the more general topic of carpe diem. The similarities and differences found in sor Juana's sonnets between these different themes, topics and motives are explored, as well as their presence in Classic and Spanish Golden Age poetic traditions.

Keywords : carpe diem; sor Juana Inés de la Cruz; Spanish poetry; Golden Age; sonnet.
