This essay studies the relations between two simultaneous and interrelated 19^th century currents: Romanticism and Occultism. Some theoretical disambiguations are made (e.g. the difference between "esotericism" as a general category and "occultism" as a specific and modern category). Special attention is paid to the extensive literary production of occultist authors, mainly in the fields of the gothic and the fantastic.
