This paper proposes an approach to À la recherche du temps perdu, taking into account the double meaning of the French term recherche, both as search and research. Two of the writing metaphors used by Proust -the building of a cathedral, and the sewing of a patchwork- are the basis for the comprehension of the work's structure as a series of recurrent spaces and times, instead of the division in seven volumes which his editors proposed and Proust never really liked.
