Resumen
ERREN, Manfred. La competencia comunicativa del orador. Acta poét [online]. 2008, vol.29, n.1, pp.121-156. ISSN 2448-735X.
In this article, based on Chomsky's and Coseriu's concept of "linguistic competence," the author argues that Greek and Latin orators needed to employ a specific style in order to be granted the right to speak in the social group to which they belonged. This "communicative competence," which seems not to have attracted the attention of classical rhetoric, is revealed in a specialized language or jargon, characterized by an affected and stereotypical diction, that needed to be employed if the orator wished to speak in Attic Greek or classical Latin. The author proves his argument by means of an analysis of the speeches in Sallust's Conspiracy of Catiline.
