This article analyzes the testimonies and critical reactions to the famous speech of the protagonist of Melanippe the Wise in the light of an important theme of the play: that of supernatural portents and their interpretation. By means of this speech, the character reveals herself as an intellectual prodigy; likewise, Melanippe's rhetorical strategy based upon emphasis, transforms her discourse into a sign akin to that of a portent, whose true significance is left for others (audience and readers included) to interpret.
