The author analyzes the concept of "new historical Latin American novel" introduced by Seymour Menton. After analyzing some examples of historical fiction in the Latin American works of the second half of 20^th century, he arrives to the conclusion that the opposition between new and traditional novels lacks a real base, and he proposes his own vision of these texts in terms of fictionalization of a post-official history which introduces its own concerns and its own, peculiar rhetorics.
