Figurative use of language, usually associated with texts, is shown to exist in derived words as well. After commenting on the general phenomenon of figurative language, the author exemplifies the way it correlates with word formation by derivation and seeks an explanation for the capacity that derived words have to constitute figures by themselves. An example of the figurative use of a derivative pattern is also given.
