The Discours de la Servitude volontaire, a sixteenth century pamphlet written by a sixteen year old young man (if we are to believe Montaigne), constitutes a passionate claim against the idea of equality among humankind. Almost twenty centuries before, Plato, basing himself on arithmetical reasoning, had raised his voice against that same idea. Both proposals are discussed in this work.
