Abstract

SAEZ GEOFFROY, Andrés. Commodus and a Strategic Decision: the End of the expeditio Germanica in 180. Nova tellus [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.1, pp.141-166.  Epub June 15, 2020. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2020.38.1.0007.

Commodus has been seen as a dissolute emperor who threw down the cliff all the golden age of the Antonines. In this article we will try to analyze one of the first decisions that the young emperor had to make, whether to continue or finish the campaigns directed by Marcus Aurelius. We will be sustained throughout this work that the strategic and military decisions of Commodus were rational in relation to the Roman military thought of the second century, contributing to the historiographical debate a new vision on Commodus and how the Roman emperors made their decisions.

Keywords : Commodus; Grand Strategy; Marcus Aurelius; Antonines; Roman Empire.
