Abstract

TENORIO, Martha Lilia. Some Notes on the Validity of the Classics in Hispanic Golden Age Poetry. Nova tellus [online]. 2019, vol.37, n.2, pp.107-138. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2019.37.2.820.

This work analyzes the ways in which the classic tradition works in Hispanic golden age poetry. On one side we show some recreations of classic themes and topics, as well as mythological stories, on the other we study how allusion works rhetorically and how the stylistic processes of classic poetry have contributed to the conformation of the poetic language in the Spanish of the 16 and 17 centuries. All is illustrated with examples from Garcilaso de la Vega, Juan de Arguijo, sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Agustín de Salazar y Torres, among others, and, mainly, with Luis de Góngora.

Keywords : Classical Tradition; Mythology; Hispanic Golden Age Poetry; Allusion.
