BALLESTEROS SANCHEZ, Juan Ramón. Forms of Otherness, Forms of Poverty. The Lipsian Reading of Aristid., Or., 26.70. Nova tellus [online]. 2018, vol.36, n.2, pp.69-107. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2018.36.2.797.

The main aim of this paper is to establish the precise meaning of Aristid., Or., 26.70, a piece of the famous Speech to Rome of Aelius Aristides (s. II A. D.). The author’s purpose is to use humanistic readings of the text (Carteromacus, Canterus, Lipsius) to find a suitable translation for the three main terms Aristides employed to define alterity in Rome: παράνοια, δυστυχία and κακοδαιμονία. Likewise, the author reconstructs the ideas and sources underliying these terms. Retrieving humanistic scholarship would be helpful to modern research in classical texts.

Palavras-chave : Iustus Lipsius; Aelius Aristides; παράνοια; δυστυχία; κακοδαιμονία.
