Abstract

RIO TORRES-MURCIANO, Antonio. Monstrare lyra ueteres heroas (Stat., Ach., I, 118). Music and Epic Poetry from Homer to Statius. Nova tellus [online]. 2014, vol.31, n.2, pp.185-198. ISSN 0185-3058.

This paper aims to study the primal relationship between music and epic poetry, whose traces are found in Homer. On one hand, such undertaking will be done under the light of ancient doctrines about musical teaching and its ethical effects. On the other, the study will also consider the way in wich moral readings of this kind, based on the Achilles at the lyre passage from the Iliad, IX, 186-189, were exploited by Statius in his Achilleid.

Keywords : ancient epic; ancient music; Homer; Statius; Achilleid.
