This paper examines Cicero's self-fashioning strategies in Att., III, 15, a letter written under circumstances which posed a serious threat to Cicero's public persona, i.e., exile. Our analysis focuses on how epistolary communication, due to the well-known characteristics of the written word as opposed to oral interchanges, intensifies the way in which every discourse imposes a scheme on life experiences, and thus becomes an especially suitable means for the writer's persuasive self-presentation.
