Before Plato some fifteen Περὶ φὐσεως were written. They formed the very archetype of what we know as the treatise form: a kind of book especially suitable to record and convey learning. Though giving rise to a literary genre of its own, little attention has been paid so far to what the various Περὶ φὐσεως could have in common. This paper is devoted to explore some common features as well as some lines of evolution of the genre. It includes a conjecture as to the establishment of the title well before the fourth century B. C.
