This article wants to make an approach on a contemporary problem about the sense or meaning of a "university" It considers the problem of "sense" in an specific context of the conditions created by the state policies for higher education during the 1990s in Argentina and its implications regarding the political and symbolic reconfiguration of the área. Finally, it puts forward some possible answers -formulated as hypotheses- to the implications of these transformations, interpreted as a process of growing diversification of the possible senses of what the university is.
