PADILLA GONZALEZ, Laura Elena. La socialización del personal académico: Fortaleciendo la profesión académica en México. Rev. educ. sup [online]. 2007, vol.36, n.142, pp.87-100. ISSN 0185-2760.
This study addressed the issue of how faculty members at Mexican higher education institutions have been prepared in order to assume their professional responsibilities. It relied on two main information sources. First was a secondary analysis of a national faculty database; second, thirty-four interviews of faculty members in 8 higher education institutions. Results emphasize five aspects: first, relevant demographic findings; second, central traits of formative faculty socialization; third, faculty education mobility: since 57 percent of faculty in the sample increased their higher education level once they became professors; fourth, conditions of study in which faculty members obtained their graduate degrees, and fifth, the prevalent academic inbreeding phenomenon.
