The society of knowledge offers potential opportunities which in spite of translating into social use of knowledge, do have a growing impact on environmental deterioration undermining good functioning of global environmental systems. If Mexico does not set sustainability principles at the core of development, it will not be able to obtain benefits expected from new information and communication technologies. The document suggests that the fostering of an environment awareness culture in population is a precondition to reach sustainability and suggests ways in which higher education can play a key role in such fostering effort.
