LLOYD, Marion e HERNANDEZ FIERRO, Víctor. Graduates from the first indigenous university in Mexico. Labor market’s utopias, challenges and realities. Almost 20 years after the founding of the first Indigenous University in Mexico, which led to the creation of a subsystem of 11 intercultural universities (UI by its acronym in Spanish), we still know very little about the effects of this educational model on its graduates. The following paper presents the findings of the first large-scale survey applied to graduates from the Autonomous Indigenous University of Mexico (UAIM by its acronym in Spanish), the pioneer and the largest of this kind of institutions. The survey, which includes the answers of more than 350 graduates from every generation and from 13 majors, represents the most extensive study on the work trajectories and perceptions of the graduates from these institutions to date. The present study allows for an in-depth analysis of the difference between the so called "conventional" and "intercultural" careers in issues such as: class occupancy levels, job sectors available, salaries, gender distribution, etc.
