This essay proposes an approximation of the traditional knowledge of indigenous communities based on Gregory Bateson’s ecological epistemology. The author’s critique of Western culture and science, and his conception of the sacred as an integrative experience of reality, offer interpretive keys to understand the eco-systemic matrix of traditional knowledge. The objective is to emphasize the contributions of Bateson’s work as an epistemological framework for understanding traditional knowledge, with important implications for educational practice as its assumptions demand a transformation of the ways to approach the plurality of knowledge in intercultural education.
