In the framework of a research project entitled “Boys and school: School exclusion in high school from the perspective of gender and masculinity,” which seeks explanations for the gap in favor of women in completion of middle school in Montevideo (Uruguay), this paper conducts a review of the available scientific literature through keywords and category groupings, about this phenomenon, which is repeated in other countries of the region and the world. The purpose of the article is to present the results of that review, with the following objectives: a) describe the frequency of the phenomenon internationally and nationally; b) classify the explanations offered by various studies of this phenomenon in different countries; and c) present contributions for understanding the phenomenon from the perspective of gender and its articulation with other explanations.
