In this article we analyze the meanings gender equality acquires for student leaders, from the perspective of women who participate or have participated over the last five years in student centers and/or federations at Chilean public and private universities. On the one hand, we place special emphasis on family referents and motivations to participate in university politics, and on the other, on the experiences and challenges of occupying spaces which are apparently neutral in terms of gender. Our research is part of an ongoing investigation which seeks to characterize the public discourse surrounding the concept of "gender equality" which emerged in Chile starting in the 1990s, and its acceptance among university students and professionals.
