GALICIA MOYEDA, Iris Xóchitl e ZARZOSA ESCOBEDO, Luis. The presence of music activities in educational programs and its influence on phonological awareness. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2014, vol.36, n.144, pp.157-172. ISSN 0185-2698.
This paper provides evidence on the influence of music activities within the linguistic sphere of children aged from four to seven years old. Through the analysis of such evidence, the authors consider that music should be present in education programs, not only to develop the aesthetic-musical abilities of the learners, but also because there are benefits to their phonological awareness. Existing preschool and first grade programs are reviewed, and it is found that the proposed activities can hardly be expected to develop phonological awareness. It is suggested that music activities at these educational levels be conducted by specialist teachers-on a greater frequency than that of the established programs-so as to be able to make a significant influence on the students, both in their artistic development and in their language skills related to phonological awareness, and, therefore, in the learning process related to reading.
