The purpose of this article is to identify, through the theoretical and methodological proposal of social representations, the perceptions, ideas and images that the learning and teaching of Mathematics have for a group of higher secondary education in the area of Physics and Mathematics at the Polytechnic National Institute (Instituto Politécnico Nacional) in Mexico-City. To gather information the author worked with 67 students who filled out a questionnaire with open questions and to whom group interviews were implemented in groups of three or four students. The answers to the questionnaire were analyzed trying to locate the dimensions that concentrate a peculiar significance with regard to the intention to organize categories able to establish rankings of the contents and to find the field of representation. The group interviews helped to clarify the meaning of the words, phrases and common sense notions used by the students.
