LOPEZ ZARATE, Romualdo; GONZALEZ CUEVAS, Oscar M.; MENDOZA ROJAS, Javier  y  PEREZ CASTRO, Judith. The ways university presidents are elected: A different path to approach the knowledge of autonomous and public universities. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.131, pp.8-27. ISSN 0185-2698.

This article has the following objectives: l) to highlight the importance of studying the types of election; 2) to describe the three typical ways Mexican public and autonomous universities have of electing presidents: community vote, university council and governing councils; 3) to point out the relationships between the ways presidents are elected and their professional background; and 4) to notice the problems that are presented in the president's election regardless of the election type. The method of analysis consisted in reviewing the universities institutional rules and statutes to contrast them with the opinions and perceptions of twelve presidents selected according to their professional background. The results of the study show the different sides of the election type, its benefits, its limitations, and its implications for the governability of the institution.

Palabras llave : President elections; types of election; institutional governability.
