The Organic Law of the Universidad de México in 1933 left in hands of the university community the responsibility of its government; at that moment the Mexican government stated the delivery of a global subsidy of ten million pesos and the loss of the national nature of the institution. This process is known as the "total autonomy" of the University. The conditions in which the University had to survive then were characterized by a very serious economic crisis, the attempts to establish relations with the government without losing autonomy and the boost and consolidation to the academic project. Within this context the intervention of the university community for the solution of the social problems was deciding This article sets out the situation of the University during the political period called "cardenismo" after President Lázaro Cárdenas government. The author analyzes the subsidy matters, the connection and social service duties and the intersdisciplinary research projects, activities that helped to reduce, at least partially, the economic pressures experienced by the University, although they also made more complicated the relations with some organizations and the local representatives, triggering internal conflicts.
