Resumen

CARDENAS MANSILLA, Claudio Sebastián. Typologies identification on attitudes towards maths in seventh an eighth basic education students. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2008, vol.30, n.122, pp.94-108. ISSN 0185-2698.

This report shows the results of surveys about the attitudes towards mathematics applied to students of seventh and eighth grade from elementary schools in the areas of Puqueldón, Chiloé, in order to identify typologies or cluster of students about the subject of mathematics. The measurement of these attitudes was carried out by means of a test of affirmative sentences and questions, using Likert scales. The statistics segmentation was made by Cluster Analysis, the validation and assessment of the cluster solution, in relation to the variable average mark, by means of Anova non-parametric ofKruskal- Wallis and multiple comparison of average marks through Duncan test, with significance P < 0.05 corrected according to Bonferroni Method. Four typologies of attitudes towards mathematics were identified. We can make the conclusion that there are four types of students in regard to their attitudes towards mathematics in the area of Puqueldón. Typology T1: intermediate level students (30.4%); typology T2: students with learning disabilities (30.4%); typology T3: advanced level students (26.6%), and typology T4: indifferent students (12 per cent).
