Abstract

This paper analyzes the development process and the efficiency level at writing skills attained by first grade students, enrolled in Mexican public schools from a low socio cultural status. Throughout the scholar term 2004-2005, 165 students were assessed. The copy, dictation, composition and comprehension skills attained by the students at different moments of their first formal education cycle were characterized and related with the pre academic and linguistic levels shown at the beginning of the cycle. Results are discussed and some proposals are made to foster the development of literacy within children from a low socio cultural status regarding the expositions from the educational psychology and the related research.
