The objective of this work was to characterize the knowledge building process experienced by the participants of a team of teacher-to-be students during the daily sessions of a course linked with research within a teacher training higher education institution. The participants of this naturalistic-qualitative study were 18 students and the facilitating teacher of the course, and qualitative techniques were used to gather the information, giving as result the identification not only of the different stages of the knowledge building process, but also of the thinking processes, individual but socially mediated, activated by the students while designing their performance structures in order to establish harmonious connections between thinking and expression, starting from a previous knowledge of the situation which made possible for them to reach progressively the goal of the programmed duty.
