The purpose of this article is to draw up a Latin American outlook of the functions performed by assessment with regard to the most common reforms within the areas, where problems such as the important growth of enrollment, crisis of funding and growing privatization, institutional diversification, internationalization, assessment, autonomy and control can be observed. In the current state of affairs, the new demands have to do with the need of higher schooling and with the innovations and transformations of the current phase of capitalism, the novelties in the labor world, the requirements of higher efficiency and productivity and the changes on the cultural and social plane.
