In this article, the author analyzes the ways in which the internal values of a developing country interact with the values and the dynamics of capitalism in a much wider field and the ways in which those values oppose themselves internally in the process of shaping higher education. The particular case of Mexico is taken here as an example of a developing country that is struggling to preserve its own cultural identity. The author also presents an analysis of the ways in which the confrontation about values has influenced the construction of Mexican higher education. The main interest here was to understand how this conflict provides to Mexican higher education its particular nature.
