In this article, the author reviews the state of the postgraduate studies at the Autonomous University of Baja California (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California or UABC) in order to build assessment systems for teaching at postgraduate level which should include: a) the recommendation made by the teachers of the different programs; b) the students' opinion about the reagents and stature of assessment; and c) the specificity shown by each area of knowledge. This research was built as a case study which started with the planning of combined methods. It made use of questionnaires, semistructurated interviews, contents analysis and statistic calculus. It also tried to identify the most important features of assessment with regard to teaching in the postgraduate studies at the UABC, recognized the particular aspects of assessment for each program and each area of knowledge and defined an overall hierarchy of those features, as well as the hierarchy that correspond to the grouping of the programs.
