This article deals with the results of a diagnostic study about the teaching-learning process in the community and productive development high schools (bachilleratos de desarrollo comunitario y productivo, BDCP) sponsored by the government of the State of Puebla (Mexico). This process takes place in three different spaces: classroom, productive projects and community. The author analyzes how the theoretical principles of the BDCP model (learn-by-doing, self-learning, group learning, project learning, participation) are carried out in the daily practice and puts the emphasis on the cognitive interactions between tutors and students. Those results are very important because they stem from an empirical analysis of the ways in which operates an educational model that both offers alternative options to young people who live in poverty and collaborates to community development. To do so, the author used a qualitative methodology that included ground interviews, questionnaires and observation records in the classrooms of 10 different high school institutions, most of them in remote rural communities.
