LOPEZ CUENCA, Alberto  e  MARQUEZ CARRILLO, Jesús. Between Revolution and Instituttion The Escuela Popular de Arte in Puebla, 1973-1974. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2023, n.66, pp.183-211.  Epub 05-Abr-2024. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2023.66.77844.

This article aims both to give a brief account and to propound a critical view of the Escuela Popular de Arte (EPA). This was a short-lived and little-studied pedagogical artistical initiative, which started in Puebla at the beginning of the 1970s. Through the consultation of bibliographical sources, periodical publications, and interviews with individuals directly involved, this article will set the epa, first, in the context of the disputes between diverse leftist movements for the control of the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla; second, in the context of the efforts of professors, students, and university staff alongside resistance movements in response to the accelerated and disparate industrialization process in the city and in the bordering rural areas; and, finally, within the frame of self-organized creative methods and of artistic experimentation used in the student movements of 1968. Subsequently, the article looks into what was probably the biggest challenge during the epa’s short existence: the impossibility of institutionalizing artistic experimentation and of using political responsibility as an educational strategy.
