As a result of Mexico’s integration into international markets in the last quarter of the 19th century, numerous foreign techno-scientific innovations were introduced into diverse areas of the country’s economic and social life. Simultaneously, the “universalization” of scientific knowledge, begun in the 17th Century and consolidated during the 19th Century, spread globally. This paper summarizes the main features of this process in Mexico and examines the role of the Scientific Society “Antonio Alzate” as the national model for a new conception of scientific sociability, both in the formulation of its epistemic principles and its internationalist vocation.
