This article explores the figure of Gregorio Cárdenas Hernández, regarded as the first Mexican serial killer and the most famous prisoner in the story of the Black Palace of Lecumberri. The four murders committed by Goyo caused an enormous commotion among citizens and raised questions about his very nature. In order to counteract the image of the man-monster that had begun to develop around him, Cárdenas wrote a series of memoirs in the form of novels in which he defined himself as a prisoner of conscience and an upright citizen.
