Abstract

VAZQUEZ MANTECON, María del Carmen. Las fiestas para el libertador y monarca de México Agustín de Iturbide, 1821-1823. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2008, n.36, pp.45-83. ISSN 0185-2620.

The festive world of the Iturbide administration is renowned for its abundance of significant, solemn dates. The main ones include those related to the country's independence and its liberator. This is followed by a series of dates associated with the new country that did not go beyond private ceremonies held by Congress and the main civil servants. Other important dates include court festivities and those associated with the imperial family and, of course, the celebrations to legitimize the monarchy organized as large-scale public shows based on a combination of new and old symbols. The article includes an analysis of the ephemeral architecture that supported the new political imagination and the ups and downs of the monarch, his court and opponents, reconstructed through the aims and staging of each celebration.

Keywords : Agustín de Iturbide; celebration; ceremony; independence; ephemeral architecture; Allegories; proclamation; coronation; oath of obedience; legitimization; representation.
