Abstract

CLAPS ARENAS, María Eugenia. José María Blanco White and the "american issue". El semanario patriótico (1809) and el español (1810-1814). Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2005, n.29, pp.5-40. ISSN 0185-2620.

This article is about the ideological position of José María Blanco White about Hispanic America history between 1809 and 1814, opinion that was expressed in two publications: Semanario Patriótico y El Español. Blanco shows to own a great clarity in the Spanish colonial matter, and his opinion should be better know than it is at the present time. He did not support the idea of an absolute independence for the Spanish colonies (at least for the first decades of the nineteenth century), because he thought that the colonies doesn't have the necessary political experience for that step, so he just defend their autonomy but inside the Spanish order.

Keywords : autonomy; independence; liberalism; Ancien Régime; Modernity; revolution.
