In the historiography about Chiapas, it has become commonplace to affirm that during the late colonial period the provincial economy entered into crisis. The objective of this essay is to show that the documents that have served as the basis for this argument contain very unreliable information. In this sense, I will use archival materials to review these sources and, furthermore, I will try to show that there is sufficient evidence that in some regions of the province, far from going through a crisis, demography, agriculture, and commerce expanded during the last years of the eighteenth century.
