Resumen

CUNILL, Caroline. The maya political thought in Sixteenth Century Yucatan: some reflections on can and than, “conversation”, “language”. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2018, vol.52, pp.117-137. ISSN 0185-2574.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.2018.52.892.

Abstract: Although in recent years significant advances have been made in the analysis of the political structure of the sixteenth century Yucatan -main offices, continuity of the governing lineages, and organization of the administrative entities,- it is still possible to go further in the understanding of the Maya political thought during this period of transition between pre-Hispanic and Colonial systems. Based on the linguistic and historical analysis of early colonial texts written in Yucatecan Maya by indigenous authorities, as well as on the definitions contained in one of the first Maya-Spanish vocabularies, this article identifies can and than “conversation” and “language”, as key notions in Maya political thought. We argue that, at the beginning of the Colonial era, the idea of “concerted discourse” was central in Maya conception of adequate governance.
