COVARRUBIAS REYNA, Miguel e BURGOS VILLANUEVA, Rafael. The archaeological landscape of central northern coast of Yucatan. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2016, vol.47, pp.55-93. ISSN 0185-2574. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.2016.47.742.
Northern Yucatan lowlands are uniform in appearance but actually there are clear environmental differences, which define several ecological niches. Human beings have been able to adapt to these microenvironments by optimizing settlements in order to benefit from local resources. The Central Northern coast of Yucatan and the inland route offer different ecological niches so, taking advantage of the results of a series of archaeological surveys and rescue projects, it has been possible to identify significant differences in settlement patterns and building characteristics. Such data can be helpful to understand the type of relationships maintained by its inhabitants with these environments and how they adapted through time.
