HAMMOND, Norman. Ciudades mayas preclásicas, raíces y evolución: el Preclásico Medio en Cuello, Belice. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2008, vol.31, pp.149-161. ISSN 0185-2574.
This short paper deals with the archaeological evidence from one of the earliest Maya communities to have been extensively excavated and especially dated for the Middle Preclassic period, the small site of Cuello in northern Belice. The autor briefly mentions the ways of life of the preclassic inhabitants, the natural environment, their crops, food staff, and that they made bark paper to render symbols on. All this evidence shows a highly ranked society, with higher levels having access to exotic goods imported from distant places of the Mayan Area and Mesoamerica as well. The article concludes pondering, to scholars, the importante of doing research on the last moment of Middle Preclassic period (700-400 B.C.).
